SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 36

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF STILLNESS

+
Give up all questions except one:
"Who am I?"
After all, the only fact you are sure of
Is that you are.
The "I am" is certain.
The "I am this" is not.
Struggle to find out what you are in reality.
- Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj offered by DailyZen on 12/16/14

+ This really is the ultimate question and sooner or later we have to deal with it. Letting go of all your identities, and there are so many, is challenging.  This practice of going deep into your mind requires patience and perseverance.  The deeper you go, the more identities will come up and not all will be pleasant or comforting.  Stay with it, with the help of friends and mentors, until you find deep, still deeper, within yourself an authenticity, a reality, a realm of unconditional, unlimited and uniting love which makes life so much more meaningful, joyful and purposeful.  It’s a new identity, a heavenly identity.  Being a heavenly being requires surrender, letting go.  This is a kind of death but it doesn’t have to be physical death.  Wisdom teachers across all of the traditions tell us that we do need to die to our limited selves in order to become who we really are.

+ I found another great  “take” on this theme by a learned Swami, Swami Atmananda Saraswati. I invite you to read “Ego, the False Me” by Swami Atmananda Saraswati.
