SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 114

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF SOLITUDE

+ Solitude is such a potential thing. We hear voices in solitude, we never hear in the hurry and turmoil of life; we receive counsels and comforts, we get under no other condition . . .

+ So, listen and be amazed, challenged, comforted and revived.  Listen to your Inner Guide and be guided into all kinds of possibilities for your life.  Try to establish an effective balance of guidance from colleagues, friends, teachers in your life and the wisdom of your Inner Guide.

+ Spirituality & Practice offers many resources on the spiritual practice of Listening and a Twelves Gallery of Memes on Listening.  The meme above comes from that gallery. Thank You S&P.

+ I would love it if you offered a guest post on this practice or any practice.  And, I have work to do on my Solitude Page.   Maybe you can help.  Send an email with the subject “Solitude” or “Guest Post” to John@abundancetrek.com.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 111

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF SOLITUDE

Not all … are called to be hermits, but all … need enough silence and solitude in their lives to enable the deep inner voice of their own true self to be heard at least occasionally.
-- Thomas Merton in The Silent Life

+ "At least occasionally."

You have heard that it is a good idea to make yourself your best friend, right?  You can only create that amazing friendship which can carry you through life if you know who you are.  Yes you can often find out who you are in community.  But solitude is also essential.  And your community can sometimes lead you astray.  Much of the hate and greed and violence of the world is created by communities which do not know how to honor the true self.  So, do not trust others to tell you who you are.  You have to discover yourself by yourself.

But, when we are involved in our communities, we can go a long way toward creating more peace and compassion by really listening to others.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 90

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF DISCERNMENT

+ Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. When people really listen to each other in a quiet, fascinated attention, the creative fountain inside each of us begins to spring and cast up new thoughts and unexpected wisdom.
— Brenda Ueland quoted in Finding What You Didn't Lose by John Fox

+ Way back in 1971, humorist Erma Bombeck wrote that it seems "rather incongruous that in a society of supersophisticated communication, we often suffer from a shortage of listeners." She was not only perceptive but prophetic.

This week, help reverse the trend. Look for a way each day to listen to someone, letting go of any other agenda. Remember all the tools at your disposal: concentrated silence, a nod, simple words of support like "um hmm" or "oh?" or "wow!" Reflect back what you hear the other person saying, so that they can hear themselves more clearly. Ask follow-up questions like "How come?" or "What happened then?" Offer gentle encouragement to someone by your unconditionally accepting presence. It's okay if that someone is yourself.
-- Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

+ Discernment happens more and more frequently and authentically as we develop the ability to really listen to others.  Instead of thinking of what you are going to say next, how about saying nothing or asking a question (preferably open-ended) or offer a statement which shows you understand or are trying to understand.  Be fascinated by each and every person  you meet, by every event and even every thought and feeling.  Try to think outside of the box.  See things in new and different ways.  Trust the process.  Let go of any need to control situations in your life.  You usually don’t have to and you benefit by letting go.  This is the process of creativity which produces more and more compassion, peace, justice and sustainable abundance.

It is important to realize that much of the significant discernment in our lives happens in groups where people share experiences, ideas and wisdom.  Group discernment is as important as individual discernment.

+ Spirituality & Practice offers many resources on the practice of discernment. The quotes above are both found in S&P.

+ Spirituality & Practice offers a Memes Gallery on Listening. The meme above is in that gallery.

+ Spirituality & Practice offers 37 Spiritual Practices with an abundance of ideas and resources for this essential practice. Some of my favorites are Attention, Being Present, Connections, Enthusiasm, Imagination, Listening, Meaning, Openness, Questing, Reverence, Silence, Transformation and Vision. Pick one or 2 and see where you are led as you continue to discern your purpose, your path, your mission, your next step.

+ I have work to do on my Discernment page.   Maybe you can help.  Send an email with the subject “Discernment” to John@abundancetrek.com

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS -- 85

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF DISCERNMENT

+ Then there is the listening at the gates of the heart which has been closed for so long, and waiting for that mysterious inner voice to speak. When we hear it, we know it is the truth to which we must now surrender our lives.
-- Beth Ferris quoted in Finding What You Didn't Lose by John Fox

+ Do you hear it? I suspect you do because you are reading this post.  I suspect you are well on your way in the process of surrendering to the power of love.  Love prevails.  Love is at the heart of the universe.  We are all connected by this powerful force, this matrix of unconditional, unlimited love.  Be still and know.  You can trust the process.  You will know what to do next and next and next as you let go and let God.  Deep within you, you already know what to do.  You know who you are.  Your wisdom and compassion are growing.  Your words and deeds are making a difference.  You ARE the light of the world. Shine brightly.  The light has always been there.

JOYFUL WANDERING -- 43

+ Updated at 1:03pm EST on Wednesday, February 6, 2013

+ On February 6 I found 2 wonderful recent posts on The Living Stones Community Blog.  Sarah wrote "Waiting: A Liturgy" and David wrote "David Norling (Spiritual Story)".  Here is an excerpt from David's profound post: "I'm currently seeking to find out what it means to feel called to a ministry that doesn't exist, that is, Pastor of Listening. I made up the title and wrote my own job description, at the encouragement of God's spirit, as far as I can tell. I've sought counsel from several pastors. And while most could see the legitimacy of my vision and even my capacity to fulfill it, there seems to be a consensus that the programmatic nature of modern American Christianity can't conceive of the role that I seek to fill."

+ Spirituality and Practice offers "10 Reasons Why I Love Reading and Reviewing Spiritual Books" by Frederic A Brussat.

+ February is Heart Month. Spirituality and Practice offers a heart quote each day.  Here is an excerpt from the Intro page: "We chose to salute heart knowledge because of the heartlessness of these violent times and because of the growing number of people who feel disheartened."

And on February 1, the following quote was offered:

"Many native cultures believe that the heart is the bridge between Father Sky and Mother Earth. For these traditions, the 'four-chambered heart,' the source for sustaining emotional and spiritual health, is described as being full, open, clear, and strong. These traditions feel that it is important to check the condition of the four-chambered heart daily, asking: 'Am I full-hearted, open-hearted, clear-hearted, and strong-hearted?'"
