SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 271

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF HEAVENLINESS

+ This is a post on the style of The Way of Prayer as we continue to explore Heavenliness through the lens of the 12 styles of the Mandala process created by Edward Bastian.  There are 3 more Mandala styles to explore after this: Reason, Relationships and Wisdom. After that, we move on to the 9 Attributes of Heaven.

+ Prayer is sitting in the silence until it silences us, choosing gratitude until we are grateful, praising God until we ourselves are a constant act of praise.
This was the Gratefulness Word for the Day on November 16, 2015.

+ We have met this amazing teacher of prayer before.  See SE62 which was offered when we were practicing humility several moons ago.  Father Richard leads the Center for Action & Contemplation. He offers daily inspiration and illumination which is well worth considering if you are looking for such a daily dose on the internet.  I invite you to browse through the website and seek inspiration, illumination, and ideas for your contemplation, meditation and prayer life.  Maybe you just want to see all the great books he has written.  Also, he is a Spirituality & Practice featured Living Spiritual Teacher.

+ The 7 steps of InterSpiritual Meditation by Edward Bastian are listed in SE21 and SE213. They are described fully in his book, InterSpiritual Meditation.

+ To get inspired and illuminated by Ed Bastian, I invite you to set aside some time for these videos:
·         Seven Steps of InterSpiritual Meditation (11 minutes)
·         2 hour lecture & conversation

+ I would love it if you offered a guest post on this practice or any practice.  And, I have work to do on my Heavenliness page.  Maybe you can help.  Send an email with the subject “Heavenliness” or “Love” or “Guest Post” to John@abundancetrek.com.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 196

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF DELIGHT

+ Find the thing that stirs your heart and make room for it. Life is about the development of self to the point of unbridled joy.
 -- Joan Chittister in Monasteries of the Heart Newsletter

+ Each person is born with a gift. Our call is to find it and care for it. The ultimate purpose of the gift is to exercise the heart into inhabiting its aliveness. For the covenant of life is not just to stay alive, but to stay in our aliveness. And staying in aliveness depends on opening the heart and keeping it open.
-- Mark Nepo in The One Life We’re Given

+ I will be sharing much of the wisdom of Edward Bastian, my InterSpirituality Mentor, as we continue to explore the practice of Delight and, then, as we explore the twelfth and final practice, Heavenliness. After that, we will explore The nine heavenly attributes and I am sure I will turn to Ed's wisdom again and again. Ed says we all have different spiritual styles which need to be discovered, cultivated and harnessed through a Mandala Process of Inquiry, Insight and Integration.

The Mandala Process can be very useful, even essential, for those of us who sincerely want to “find the thing that stirs your heart” and “stay in our aliveness.”

+ You can be introduced to Ed’s wisdom at the Spiritual Paths website.  Ed is the Founder and President of the Spiritual Paths Foundation.  He has written 2 books on InterSpirituality which you can find on the Amazon Author Page for Edward Bastian. In Ed’s book on InterSpiritual Meditation (and in the internet course found at the Spiritual Paths website) we are invited to think about and write about a variety of themes connected to happiness & health including:  Mind, Body and Spirit. And, for gratefulness:   Remembrance, Gratitude, Trust, Devotion, Prayer and Offering.

To get inspired and illuminated by Ed Bastian, I invite you to set aside some time for https://youtu.be/Yy_jK7a0qBs (2 hours) and / or https://youtu.be/TEF5BhN3c5s (15 minutes).

+ Delight is not one of the 37 Spirituality & Practice practices BUT put Delight in their Search Engine and you come up with 85 items including 67 quotes, 16 books, 1 practice, and 1 film as of 6/14/16.  Go to http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/search/?q=Delight.  However, it is clear that Mary Ann & Frederic Brussat are big fans of Joy. Therefore, put Joy in their Search Engine and you come up with 2057 items including 867 quotes, 835 books, 160 practices, 11 teachers, 24 arts links, 29 e-courses, 98 films, 26 blogs and 4 traditions as of 6/14/16. Oh, and Joy IS one of the 37 spiritual practices. You can also be inspired by their Twelves Gallery on Joy.

+ Joy will come up again very soon in these explorations since it is the second of 9 heavenly attributes we will be exploring.

+ I would love it if you offered a guest post on this practice or any practice.  And, I have work to do on my Delight page.  Maybe you can help.  Send an email with the subject “Delight” or “Guest Post” to John@abundancetrek.com.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 160

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF HOLINESS

+ Holy is the supernatural extra brilliant kindness of the soul.

Brother Wayne expands on this in his Day 4 page of The Mystic Hours (what an amazing book BTW):
This great American poet of the Beat generation, who embraced a wild Buddhist mysticism in his life and poetry, here identifies the ultimate quality that spiritual practice refines in us: utter kindness.  Every saint of every faith tradition espouses it and indeed actualizes it in his or her life. If you want to know with immediate and tangible recognition what God is like, examine kindness in yourself and others. It is your own deepest inner nature. It only has to be revealed. Let us discover in ourselves this heart animated by kindness.

+ This is the final post in the Journey of the Body and its’ practices of Solitude, Devotion and Holiness.  I know I could go on and on with Wisdom on the practice of Holiness but I’m sure you must realize by now that this practice is inclusive of all of the spiritual practices.  It is simply the practice of celebrating your Holiness which is your birthright.  In other words, every spiritual practice is holy and full of Joy and reveals kindness in all kinds of ways.
+ Holiness is not one of the 37 Spirituality & Practice practices BUT put Holiness in their Search Engine and you come up with 460 items including 227 quotes, 168 books, 28 practices, 14 teachers, 12 arts links, 7 e-courses, 3 films and 1 blog as of 5/11/16.  Go to http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/search/?q=holiness.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 158

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF HOLINESS

+ Holiness is being aware that you are in the presence of God. That something else is happening, something numinous, trascendent, other. Something that partakes of life and death, good and evil (remember the two trees in the Garden of Eden). An object, a place, a time, a person, is holy because it evokes the presence of God. We cover our heads, remove our shoes, look away in reverence. Unlike some spiritual traditions that see the world divided ontolgically and irretrievably into sacred and profane, here we are told that, by our actions, we can realize the holiness in everything.
— Lawrence Kushner in Five Cities of Refuge by Lawrence Kushner, David Mamet

+ Or we uncover our heads!  Christian men traditionally take their hats off in churches.

Traditions differ but beyond all of the differences is that “shared mystic heart beating in the center of the world’s deepest spiritual traditions” as Brother Wayne Teasdale put it.  No one has an exclusive hold on Holiness.  We become more holy as we open ourselves up to the presence of God in every person, every creature, every culture, indeed everything that we encounter.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS -- 61

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF HUMILITY

+ Masters of the Japanese tea ceremony use the term kokoro ire, or "inclusion of the heart's spirit." The best tea ceremonies have nothing to do with fancy surroundings or making a good impression; the determinant of success is the sincere and humble heart of the host.
-- Philip Toshio Sudo in Zen 24/7

+ In their book review of 24/7, Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat say the author is “A master teacher of the way of enlightenment (who) makes everyday spirituality come alive.”  Here is an excerpt from the review:

With an ease that comes from spiritual maturity, Sudo delivers one marvel after another in this astute reading of zen truths residing in work, exercise, eating, laughter, and sleep.

Or as the author puts it — "Zen teaches that our approach to today determines our whole approach to life. The Japanese call this attitude Ichi-nichi issho: 'Each day is a lifetime.'

+ So, then, this state of humility we are working on could be considered everyday hospitality.  It is an attitude to be practiced 24/7.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS -- 52

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF HUMILITY

+ Humility is the key to wonder. As humility grows, wonder deepens. You will see yourself as a temporary expression of God's infinite and timeless unfolding. Aware of your impermanence, you become brother and sister to all life. You realize the common fate of all beings and find in that realization a compassion that embraces all beings. – Rabbi Rami Shapiro in The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness excerpted from  http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/quotes/features/view/27978/quotations-on-humility

+ We are heavenly beings having a temporary human experience.  This human experience is wonderful.  Moments when we experience the greater life of heaven are more wonderful still.  Let this practice become the key to infinite possibilities.   See what emerges as you go deeper and deeper into this realm of peace and joy.  Enjoy becoming one with everything.  Humility is the great equalizer and connector making life heavenly.  Practicing humility is the key to the wonderful realization that “compassion .. embraces all beings.”

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS -- 32

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF STILLNESS

Step 5 of InterSpiritual Meditation: "May I Be Focused and Mindful Through Breathing”

Calm, steady, and focused breathing are at the heart of many secular and spiritual techniques of meditation. When we breathe properly, we become less stressed and distracted; we are able to think more clearly, and to focus on the task at hand. Our blood-pressure drops, and our anxiety disappears. Many spiritual traditions teach deep and profound methods of breathing that balance our energies and center our consciousness deep within our being, where we are able to concentrate on our spiritual practice. In this step, we allow our consciousness to recede from our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, touch, thoughts, and emotions. As we breathe gently, our consciousness rides on the subtle breath into our heart center. This is the place that many traditions call ‘the seat of the soul,’ the core of our consciousness. Residing there, we may begin our own respective meditations, contemplations, and prayers. In this process, we learn to develop the capacity of ‘mindfulness’ and to observe our innermost thoughts, emotions, habits, and memories.
-- Edward Bastian of Spiritual Paths

Everybody has a unique rhythm of breathing.  When I focus on my breathing, I like to begin with the exhale, the emptying, the letting go, the release, the surrender.  I say: “Breathe deeply.”  Then, the inhale becomes a powerful, creative, inspiring, illuminating, divine source of love and abundance.  I say: Breathe fully.”

Breathe deeply. Breathe fully.
Be still. Be silent.
Be centered. Be grounded.
Lighten up. Loosen up.
Let go. Let God.
Celebrate. Enjoy.
Be glad all over.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORATIONS – 31

WE ARE EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF STILLNESS

+ To attain peace, what one has to do is to seek that rhythm which is in the depth of our being. It is just like the sea: the surface of the sea is ever moving; the depth of the sea is still. And so it is with our life. If our life is thrown into the sea of activity, it is on the surface. We still live in the profound depths, in that peace. But the thing is to become conscious of that peace which can be found within ourselves. It is this which can bring us the answer to all our problems. If not, when we want to solve one problem, there is another difficult problem coming. There is no end to our problems. There is no end to the difficulties of the outer life. And if we get excited over them, we shall never be able to solve them. Some think, ‘We might wait. Perhaps the conditions will become better. We shall see then what to do.’ But when will the conditions become better? They will become still worse! Whether the conditions become better or worse, the first thing is to seek the kingdom of God within ourselves, in which there is our peace. As soon as we have found that, we have found our support, we have found our self. And in spite of all the activity and movement on the surface, we shall be able to keep that peace undisturbed if only we hold it fast by becoming conscious of it.
-- Hazrat Inayat Khan excerpted from http://wahiduddin.net/mv2/I/I_IV_6.htm

+ The only ones who can bring peace to the world are those who have found peace within themselves, “the peace which passes understanding” proclaimed by Jesus who also said “The Kingdom of God is within you” and “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”

+ I go the Bowl of Saki day after day and find immense wisdom from this Sufi master of the twentieth century. There are always several paragraphs of his wisdom compiled by his grandson like the one above.  In these 366 posts his wisdom will be found from time to time but you can go right to Wahududdin’s Web for a very comprehensive offering of this Sufi wisdom.

JOYFUL WANDERING -- 57

+ Today I am devoting myself to the spiritual practice of prayer which I regard as the comprehensive term for all spiritual practice.

“Prayer is none other than an expanding of our hearts in the presence of God.” -- John Calvin

For me, prayer begins with simply being still and listening to the wisdom which comes in mysterious and wonderful ways.  To remind me to pray I use the mindfulness bell when I sit in front of my computer. As a Christian I am called by the apostle Paul to pray unceasingly.  This is simple but not easy!

I am particularly fond of the Prayer attributed to Saint Francis:

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

This, I believe, is prayer at its best for it emphasizes service, compassion, reconciliation, unity, cooperation and, most of all, peace.  Peace is beyond understanding.  In Christ we are offered a peace which is different than any peace the world offers.  To find this peace, detachment and humility are essential.  We can live up to the ideals of this wonderful prayer only by “letting go and letting God.” This requires practice, practice, practice and, then, more practice.  Practice throughout life.  Never stop practicing.

The more we practice, the more we can reduce our attachments to worldly pleasures and expectations. We can become our true selves, the Real Self God intends us to be.  This is bliss.  This is heaven.  This is the treasure we seek and which requires giving up all other treasures.  This can only be accomplished through prayer.

Praying is done in solitude and in community.  Both are essential.  We are accountable both to God or our True Self AND to each other, to every creature, to everything everywhere.  We must reach deeply within and far, far out, as deep and as far as we can.  The founder of my branch of Christianity, John Calvin, said it well: “Prayer is none other than an expanding of our hearts in the presence of God.”

Of course, other wise voices have spoken as well.  Mary Oliver encourages us in this way:

It doesn't have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don't try
to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.

Prayer is far more listening than speaking.  It is wise to heed the guidance of Sue Bender who said: “Listening to your heart, finding out who you are is not simple. It takes time for the chatter to quiet down. In the silence of 'not doing' we begin to know what we feel. If we listen and hear what is being offered, then anything in life can be our guide.”

Openness is essential.  Henri J.M. Nouwen (1932-1996), a great spiritual teacher, spoke eloquently about this practice:

"To pray means to open your hands before God. It means slowly relaxing the tension which squeezes your hands together and accepting your existence with an increasing readiness, not as a possession to defend, but as a gift to receive. Above all, prayer is a way of life which allows you to find a stillness in the midst of the world where you open your hands to God's promises and find hope for yourself, your neighbor, and your world. In prayer, you encounter God not only in the small voice and the soft breeze, but also in the midst of the turmoil of the world, in the distress and joy of your neighbor, and in the loneliness of your own heart.

"Prayer leads you to see new paths and to hear new melodies in the air. Prayer is the breath of your life which gives you the freedom to go and to stay where you wish and to find the many signs which point out the way to a new land. Praying is not simply some necessary compartment in the daily schedule of a Christian or a source of support in a time or need, nor is it restricted to Sunday mornings or mealtimes. Praying is living. It is eating and drinking, action and rest, teaching and learning, playing and working. Praying pervades every aspect of our lives. It is the unceasing recognition that God is wherever we are, always inviting us to come closer and to celebrate the divine gift of being alive.”
Yes!

And, finally, here is the big question as Brother David Steindl-Rast puts it: “… prayer is an attitude, an attitude of lifting up heart and mind to God. So … ask, ‘What lifts up your heart and mind? …’ Whatever lifts up your heart, focus on that.” (found in Celeste Yacoboni, How Do You Pray?)

Yes, what lifts up MY heart and mind?  Let me list a few things here: My wife, my family, my friends, my church, my planet, my universe, my discoveries, my explorations, my history, my dreams and visions, my hopes, my travels, my colleagues, my teachers, tastes, odors, movement, music, ideas and more.

What lifts up YOUR heart and mind?

Keep praying.  Keep celebrating “the divine gift of being alive.” Be open to all kinds of possibilities.

+ Since JW56 I have been to England and Wales and, closer to home, the Adirondacks and the Berkshires.  My life has been affected deeply by the deaths of my wonderful mother-in-law, Dorothy Hann, and my wonderful sister, Anita Solomon.

+ Updated at 3:09pm ESDT on Saturday, June 13, 2015

+ Inner Frontier Inner Work this week (June 8-14) is Living in Flow, Part 4, Fluid Mind. Here is an excerpt: “Flow means freedom. We can only live in flow to the extent that we are inwardly free. And freedom in front of our thoughts is a major step toward complete liberation. What does that freedom look like? Imagine that rather than falling under the spell of and reacting to every chain of thoughts going on in your mind, you instead know intuitively and without effort that those thoughts are not who you are, that they have no power or claim over you, that they are just thoughts, just words passing through your mind, and then you return to your presence and breathe easy. If there is something useful, creative, or truly urgent in those thoughts, you may take appropriate action, but without being identified with the thoughts. One measure of our being is the extent to which we live in the deep currents of stillness beneath our thoughts, the source of true flow, rather than on the surface of our mind, where endless chatter and self-centeredness abound.”

+ Inner Frontier Inner Work this week (June 1-7) is Living in Flow, part 3: Sensory Flow. Here is an excerpt: “As this river of our sensory life cascades through time, our relationship with it determines the extent to which we live in flow. There are two primary ways we stop ourselves from living in flow. The first is by putting obstacles into the stream and the second is by letting ourselves be carried away by the stream.”

+ MAY I BE TRANSFORMED: Breath by breath I seek to be transformed into my better self, my real self, my divine self.  We all are divine in our depths.  This is a hidden reality until we accept the truth that we really are made in the likeness of God and, therefore, we are intimately, intricately and infinitely connected by a matrix of unconditional, unlimited and uniting love which is miraculous, mysterious and marvelous.  What a wonderful reality this is and how we miss it unless and until we accept the truth.

Back to first person: I have a tendency to avoid the truth, to live in the darkness of the perception that I live in a realm of scarcity, deprivation, loneliness and confusion.  I don’t!  I am called to live in the light, the love, the joy of this realm of abundance.

In other words, I need to embrace transformation as liberation rather than bondage, as something I can accomplish through the amazing grace of God.  I will not be fully transformed into my perfectly divine self in this life.  But I can enjoy the process of getting a little closer and maybe even a lot closer since God loves me no matter what and miracles do happen.

+ I am a fan of James Redfield and his Celestine Vision. Now he has written an article which gets to the heart of his insights: "5 Ways Spirituality Will Enhance Your Life." Excerpt > “In the genuine search for Spirituality, the first experience one often detects is the development of ‘mysterious coincidences.’ This very common phenomenon was termed ‘Synchronicity’  by the noted, early twentieth-century, depth psychologist, Carl Jung. It is defined as ‘the experience of meaningful events in one’s life that are so timely in occurrence it feels as though some hand of fate or destiny is involved.’”

The five ways are:

  • Awareness of Synchronicity
  • Intuitive Awareness
  • Karmic Design
  • Prayer Power
  • The Ultimate Sense of Peace and Well Being
+ Here is an excerpt from this week's Inner Frontier Inner Work on "Body Flow" > “Walking is a microcosm of our life. We are active, needing to pay attention, but thoughts come, some from other thoughts, some from the sensory impressions we receive while walking. Can we just simply be in our body, as we walk? Not distracted by our thoughts, but here in our body.”

STORY SHARING -- 1

+ It has to happen. You can be a Christian but you’ve got to be a Buddhist too … and a Hindu … and a Jew …and a Muslim … and a Shaman … and a Taoist … and a Wicca … and a Sikh … and an agnostic … and an atheist … and a scientist … and (add your own possibilities).  I call this mutual conversion.

+ Humanity is at a crossroads.  We have come a long, long way in our million years since we evolved from something pre-human.  But we have a long way to go if we are going to stop killing each other and killing far too many animals and plants.

+ How are we going to do that?  I don’t know but I want to urge us on somehow.  I have a few ideas … well maybe even a lot of ideas that I want to share.  They are not original ideas.  Maybe one or 2 are, I don’t know. They are ideas I have discovered over the years as I have sought wisdom and guidance from many sources. I don’t pretend to speak to the whole human race. But I have your attention and maybe I can keep your attention long enough to influence you in a positive way so that you can contribute even more effectively to a future of compassion, peace, justice and sustainable abundance. I believe we can create such a future if we can learn how to radically embrace and own the stories of others, one story at a time.

+ It is urgent that we begin to affirm the stories of others as much as we affirm our own stories. So urgent.

+ I have a story.  It’s a good one.  It is not better than your story.  But my story is a good story and I want you to embrace it, to own it, yes, to make it your own.  You don’t have to claim all of the details but I want you, I need you, to embrace and own my story as much as you possibly can.  And my promise to you is that I will embrace and own your story as much as I possibly can.

+ Some of my story may be easy for you to embrace and own because you and I surely share some common themes.  I am going to call these themes “gifts.”  As you look over the contents of this book I hope you can identify some gifts you have received with the same titles that I use. But, on the other hand, there may be some gifts in my story which you will not find easy to embrace and own.  That’s the challenge I put before you and me. I need to move out of my comfort zone and radically embrace some gifts which are not familiar to me, which threaten me, which scare me, which confuse me.  I believe we all need to do that. I believe our journey will become more and more amazing, fantastic, wonderful as we discover, explore, experiment, create a new and greater story by giving and receiving new and different gifts.  What do you think?

JOYFUL WANDERING -- 47

+ I have some catching up to do since it has been 2 months since I last posted here.

+ I really enjoyed an e-course on InterSpiritual Meditation which ended about a month ago.  I wrote a 17 page paper for the course and sent it to the teacher, Ed Bastian, on April 29.  Ed is the founder and president of the Spiritual Paths Institute based in Santa Barbara CA.

Here is an excerpt from the web page on the curriculum: "The Spiritual Paths Institute curriculum on InterSpiritual Wisdom is a course of study with respected teachers of contemplative wisdom and applied spirituality that combines intellect, heart, and spiritual practice. It was developed by an InterSpiritual team of exceptional teachers, each authenticated within their respective traditions. The program is based on an intellectual inquiry and contemplative experience of the teachings of the worlds sacred traditions combined with personally mentored spiritual practice."

On another page, there is this information about Ed's books and current courses: "Ed Bastian, who has led our group programs over the past ten years, is presenting a series of retreats, classes, and online courses that summarize the underlying shared wisdom offered by our teachers and courses. These courses are based on the following books and workbooks that he has authored, co-authored, or published:  Living Fully Dying Well, InterSpiritual Meditation, Meditations for InterSpiritual Wisdom and Creating Your Spiritual Path"

+ Spirituality and Practice offers its latest 12s gallery.  It's on Forgiveness. Inspirational and challenging.  Humanity needs this desperately. And don't forget to forgive yourself.

+ The current emphasis at Inner Frontier is Wisdom.  There is plenty of illuminating and inspiring and challenging wisdom in these weekly Inner Work practices.  This week the focus is on Spiritual Efficacy. Here is an excerpt: "Teachers can help by instructing us in spiritual practices. They can also help by being examples that ordinary people, no different than us, can enter true spiritual transformation. Teachers can help by easing our way into deeper experiences through the quality of their energy, when we practice in person with them. And teachers can inspire us. All of that is important, useful, perhaps even pivotal in setting our feet on the path. But it masks a fundamental truth: the spiritual path is within us, it cannot be shown, it can only be discovered."

+ (posted yesterday on Coffee Break 371 on my John A Wilde blog):
“Religion Beyond the Right" by Frank Bruni is an outstanding NY Times Op Ed column pointing out that there really are a lot of biblical values associated with the Left and the Center.  Bruni focuses on the controversy surrounding the Boy Scouts ban on gays. Excerpt: "'I find it perplexing the way the "moral values" phrase is used,' said the Rev. Mark Greiner... (a Presbyterian pastor)... 'Concern for the environment, concern for workers’ rights: those are moral values,' he told me. 'But the phrase ends up being limited to matters of human sexuality, as if Jesus was primarily concerned with what people did with their reproductive parts. It’s crazy-making.' Greiner wants the ban on gay scouts and leaders lifted." | Read the article

+ Last night's joyful wandering took me to Fenway Park.  Well, not really.  Only through the magic of television.  The Red Sox beat the Yankees 4-0.  Pitching ace Josh Beckett allowed only 2 hits as the Red Sox won their first series of the year. I love Baseball.  Especially when the Red Sox win.  Or the Giants as in last year's World Series. The first time the Giants won that fall classic since moving to San Francisco in 1958.

+ Inner Frontier offers "The Eightfold Path" by Joseph Naft.  This is one of the best in his Weekly Inner Work series of lessons.

+ Inner Frontier offers "The Peace of Meditation" by Joseph Naft. This is the third lesson of 11 in his The Path of Liberation series.

Excerpt 1: "To see our thoughts as thoughts, as self-generating, automatic thoughts, to see our emotions as emotions, as self-generating, visceral responses and reactions to inner and outer events, we need some space, we need a place to see from, a place to gain some perspective on our inner world. That is one of the primary purposes and powers of meditation: to find the spacious inner peace of cognizant stillness, the true consciousness."

Excerpt 2: "Meditation shows us the possibility of living in awareness itself, rather than in thoughts and emotions, attitudes and reactions. Relaxing into awareness, into the cognizant substrate beneath our thoughts and emotions, takes us out of that busy stream."

THE NEW FAITH FOR THE NEW EARTH -- 1

+ updated at 10:05am EST on Friday, February 25, 2011

+ THIS IS AN UNFINISHED POST: This post will be unfinished indefinitely as I add resources and probably change the order of the resources to be in some kind of priority order.  Also, I am waiting for your ideas and resources.

+ PLEASE SHARE! I have been gathering idea for what I am now calling THE NEW FAITH FOR THE NEW EARTH for many years.  I want to share these ideas as much as I possibly can and so I am now starting this new series of posts on THE NEW FAITH FOR THE NEW EARTH.  Your ideas are welcome.  Please share them in Blog Comments, on Facebook and Twitter, E-Mails, etc.  I must begin with important websites, books and other resources which are promoting the values I cherish, particularly Compassion, Peace, Justice and Sustainable Abundance:

+ And now for THE RESOURCES IN SOME KIND OF PRIORITY ORDER:

WWW.SPIRITUALITYANDPRACTICE.COM is the planet's best website.  Simply amazing how Mary Ann and Frederic Brussat have accumulated wisdom from all kinds of sources and offer it in an accesible way.  They offer dozens of spiritual practices.  They review thousands of movies and books.  They offer great courses led by very wise teachers.  The forums allow sincere spiritual seekers to be enriched by the sharing of many people who represent a great variety of the planet's wisdom traditions.

THE CHURCH OF I AM creatively points out that there is a deep reservoir of shared wisdom about our intimate connection to God and to all creation.  This wisdom is often called The Perennial Philosophy, or Mysticism.

+ For more than a decade I have been seeking Spiritual Websites.  Recently I added 26 more.  These are listed first in the Spiritual Websites section on the Abundancetrek Connections Galore page.  These are followed by 67 "oldies but goodies" which remain big favorites.

+ When I get to the second post, I intend to share my ideas, hopes, dreams, visions and action plans.  And I would love to include your ideas, hopes, dreams, visions and action plans.

JOYFUL WONDERING -- 1

+ updated at 1:07pm EST on Friday, January 28, 2011

+ ANYTHING GOES in this series of posts here on 2 of my blogs -- John A Wilde and The Abundancetrek Blog -- which I begin today, January 27, 2011.  Well, that doesn't mean I will share everything I think or believe. Not yet anyway.  But I will share a lot and I would sure welcome some support and encouragement and wisdom from fellow joyful wonderers.

+ The COFFEE BREAK SERIES OF POSTS will definitely continue and be a priority because I simply enjoy finding web pages filled with wisdom or important information on the subjects of COMPASSION, PEACE, JUSTICE and SUSTAINABLE ABUNDANCE.  The world needs far more of these things.

+ On my Abundancetrek homepage I have changed my vision from "The New Church for the New Age" to THE NEW FAITH FOR THE NEW EARTH.  Have I become Post-Christian?  No, I don't think so.  As a matter of fact, I think I am becoming REALLY A CHRISTIAN as I open up more and more to wisdom and compassion from all over the planet.  We are lucky to live in an age when we can receive and realize the wisdom of so many great sages of the ages including many, many current sages.  A website which offers this wisdom on a daily basis is Spirituality and Practice, the best website on the planet by far.

+ I haven't updated my CONNECTIONS GALORE PAGE recently but it will still get you to many of the best websites promoting Compassion, Peace, Justice and Sustainable Abundance.  Another place to look is right here on the sidebar where I continue to find  websites and web pages on these themes and more.

+ The need to BEGIN AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN is taught by many sages of the ages. We need a childlike awareness and appreciation of our constantly changing reality.  Nothing remains the same.  A great Zen Master particularly emphasizes this need.  I can't locate the book here in my study at the moment.  It should be on the Priority Shelf!

+ NEW JANUARY 28:

+ One of my favorite theologians is Harvey Cox.  Recently he wrote THE FUTURE OF FAITH.  In it, he quotes Einstein, one of my favorite scientists:

The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. He who knows it not and can no longer wonder, no longer feel amazement, is as good as dead, a snuffed-out candle.

It was the experience of mystery--even if mixed with fear--that engendered religion. A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, of the manifestations of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which are only accessible to our reason in their most elementary forms--it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute the truly religious attitude; in this sense, and in this alone, I am a deeply religious man.

( I found this at http://einsteinandreligion.com/mysterious.html. It goes on there for another paragraph which is also profound but I disagree with his belief that we can't have a life beyond this one. There are too many experiences in my life which suggest that a life beyond this one is indeed likely but I agree with Einstein that punishment in eternity is not what God is up to.)

I will possibly come back to both Cox and Einstein in these posts since they are among the most intriguing of the planet's joyful wonderers, past and present.

JOYFUL WANDERING -- 1

+ updated at 2:28pm ESDT on Friday, May 21, 2010

+ I have been doing most of my blogging recently at The John A Wilde Blog but I think that's about to change as a result of my decision to begin this new series of posts called JOYFUL WANDERING.  It could also be called JOYFUL WONDERING.  Or maybe JUST WONDERING.

I believe God wants us to enjoy life.  Really enjoy it.  For some this means accumulating lots of money and possessions and power but that's NOT what I have in mind here.  No way.

No, God wants us to be thankful for everything God provides, provides abundantly, provides FREE.  The universe really is a FREE LUNCH.  Something out of Nothing.

I just discovered some wonderful synchronicity for this first JW post:

Today's Daily Lectionary includes these pertinent verses from 1 Thessalonians and Matthew 6:
  • But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the faint hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-22)
  • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. (Matthew 6:19-21, 24)
We are creating this wonderful, fantastic universe.  Right now.  Right here. Enjoy!  Be glad all over! Take a deep breath and take in the beauty, the abundance, the love, the joy, the peace.  Right now.  Right here.

If you come with me on this journey, I can promise you only companionship.  I do not know where we are going or how we will get there.  We are simply wandering and wondering and discovering and exploring.  Oh, I suppose I do have an itinerary in mind but the itinerary is subject to change.  My personality type is INFP and one of the most basic attributes of an INFP is "Logic is Optional."

I think we can have a lot of fun and I think we can help the universe become more compassionate as we take this journey.  I hope you will join me because I think this journey is very important.  I have a lot to share with you and you have a lot to share with me.  2 minds are better than 1. 3 are better than 2. 4 are better than 3.

100 are better than 99.

1000 are better than 999.

I think you get the idea!

Let's go.

I want this to start on a very positive note, so let's begin with MUSIC.  My favorite music is Rock'n'Roll but I enjoy plenty of other types as well.  I really like Celtic Music and Reggae and all kinds of World Music.  Here's a link to a song and video which always brings tears of joy to my eyes:

NEW SOUL by Yael Naim

(sorry about the ad) (maybe I can find a better link) (check for an update of this post)

Fellow trekkers, please suggest more JOYFUL WANDERING, JOYFUL WONDERING music for the trek. OK?

REFORMED AND ALWAYS BEING REFORMED -- 3

+ We definitely need to re-imagine Jesus.  The Jesus Seminar has contributed immensely to a new and much improved understanding of Jesus which moves us away from the Jesus-olatry and Bible-olatry which has plagued our great wisdom tradition for centuries.  I love Jesus.  I love the Bible.  Idolizing Jesus and the Bible reduces their impact.  God mercifully gives us the great gift of freedom.  We are free to find new meaning and joy and to reject doctrines which simply do not make sense in our times.  Great thinkers like Diarmuid O'Murchu, Cynthia Bourgeault, Marcus Borg, Raimon Panikkar, Matthew Fox, Sallie McFague and John Shelby Spong (to mention only a few) are leading us forward with great courage and fantastic freedom and curiosity and wisdom.

In the S&P course on InterSpiritual Wisdom, Cynthia Bourgeault says:

The modern Christian mystical theologian Raimon Panikkar suggests intriguingly that the real problem all along has been that JESUS WAS NOT A MONOTHEIST! His experience of God was much more a flowing, interabiding one (i.e, "I in you, and you in me, that all may be one...)--a flow later captured (though usually misunderstood) in the doctrine of the Trinity, where form, emptiness, created, and uncreated are always engaged in a circle dance of love--yes, Rami, the very essence of divine "is-ing." It was Jesus's claims of too great intimacy with God that violated the strong Abrahamic sense of an unbridgeable abyss between creator and creature and the radical unknowability of God. Panikkar argues impressively that it was the attempt to paste Jesus's radically nondual vision onto the metaphysical basis of Jewish monotheism that resulted in the "San Andreas fault" running through the heart of the Christian message to this day.

Related closely to this powerful idea are the provocative and progressive teachings of John Shelby Spong. Spirituality and Practice offers a review of A New Christianity for a New World: Why Traditional Faith Is Dying & How a New Faith Is Being Born by John Shelby Spong.

Excerpt 1: "Spong tosses aside the theistic supernatural overlay on the man from Nazareth. He sees him as a boundary breaker who tears down the walls that separate people. He also is a fear buster who by his magnetic passion convinces individuals to put aside tribal and xenophobic fears. Spong concludes: 'Jesus will become the doorway into the Holy for those of us who have been privileged to know his name, but there will be other doorways for other people.'"

Excerpt 2: "Progressive Christians who are re-imagining their faith in the twenty-first century will find this thought-provoking and substantive work right in sync with prior works by Matthew Fox, Andrew Harvey, Wayne Teasdale, and Diarmuid O'Murchu."
